Women-driven Maharashtra pink e-rickshaw system will soon be launched in ten cities in Maharashtra including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nagpur. The Women and Child Ministry has submitted a plan in this regard to Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar. Minister of Women and Child Development, Dr Prashant Narnaware announced that 5,000 pink rickshaws have been proposed for the first year of the scheme.
Under this scheme, the government will give subsidy to 20% unemployed women so that they can buy rickshaws; They will be responsible for 10% of the total cost, with bank loans covering the remaining 70%. Goa, Lucknow and Surat have all seen the introduction of such e-rickshaws.
Though the idea of women operating rickshaws is not new, the government has launched the Aboli rickshaw scheme exclusively for women, without any financial assistance.
With bank loans covering 85% of the cost of the car, applicants only had to pay 15% of the total cost. However, the Aboli rickshaw scheme failed, and Aboli rickshaws are scarce in Maharashtra.

The main aim of launching an innovative program i.e., Maharashtra Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme is to support and promote job prospects. Additionally, the program will provide safety for women who travel to these cities.

The Maharashtra government intends to introduce pink e-rickshaws in ten different cities. The pink rickshaw scheme will provide a means of livelihood for vulnerable women in urban areas. According to Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, it will address the need for women to have safe transport options.
These e-rickshaws will be driven by women drivers The government intends to provide 20 per cent subsidy to unemployed women who buy rickshaws.
Women candidates will have to pay only 10% of the rickshaw fare under the proposed scheme and bank loans for the remaining 70 per cent.
Commissioner for Women and Child Development, Dr Prashant Narnavar informed that he received 5,000 pink rickshaws issued in the first year. The inclusion of e-rickshaws in the pink rickshaw scheme reduces maintenance costs and promotes environmental sustainability.

Women candidates will only be required to contribute 10% of the rickshaw’s cost under the proposed arrangement. The remaining 70% will be financed by bank loans, with a 20% subsidy from the state government.
