A significant change has been made to the regulations controlling the Gruha Jyothi scheme, which offers free power for use up to 200 units, by the Karnataka Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. In place of the 10% additional subsidy on average usage, the government has opted to distribute an additional 10 free units, regardless of usage, up to a maximum of 200 units.
The state government determined free power under the former Gruha Jyothi scheme by taking into account the average usage of the customer over the previous 12 months. The entitled free usage was then calculated by adding an extra 10%.
A customer will now be eligible for free usage of 90 units, for instance, if their typical usage is 80 units. In a similar vein, a customer will get free electricity for 175 units if their typical usage is 165 units. It is anticipated that the bills created in February will be the first to be implemented under this new norm.
Although customers eating fewer than 100 units will profit from this modification, individuals consuming more than 100 units will suffer from it. According to Energy Minister KJ George, this change would cost the government an extra 500–600 crore rupees.
